Preston (1910) wrote a paper on mollusca from the Shimba Hills in Kenya and elsewhere with no collectors mentioned and I have always thought it was not possible it could have appeared so quickly if it had been Kemp who collected them; he collected in the Shimba Hills on 27 July to 5 August 1910 and the part of Ann. Mag. nat. Hist. in which the paper appeared is stamped 4 Nov. 1910 in The Natural History Museum copy.

A parcel sent from nearby Mombasa could have reached London by the end of August; only a few days might have been necessary for Preston to write up the material and have the photographs taken. Journals with numerous parts issued per year appeared like clockwork at that time and a manuscript handed in as late as early October could have appeared in early November. It is clear from annotations on specimen boxes made by Connolly that he thought or knew Kemp was the collector. I will list these additional specimens at a later date.

I have not had time to thoroughly search for type material. Some information is entirely derived from the accession books in The Natural History Museum which indicate ‘paratype, cotype and holotype’ not always in accordance with present day more stringent interpretations. Occasionally a few numbers are cited which are obviously original material but are not labelled with any type indication – for which I have used the abbreviation n.t.i., but probably not consistently. There may well also be type material in the general collection. The expression ‘MAC not found’ does not mean the material is not at Tervuren but it was not found under the original name. It is likely that almost everything that should be there is there but its position has probably been moved due to a name change or reidentification. It would not have been reasonable to expect staff there to hunt further in such circumstances. I am very grateful to Dr R. Jocqué for the information he sent. Anyone wanting to borrow material must give all the possible names under which it might be found. When the MAC material is listed by Schouteden as a type and consists of a single specimen it could be a holotype and is at least the obvious choice as a lectotype since Schouteden is merely publishing what Preston originally wrote on the labels. When Connolly has marked a single specimen of one of his own species as holotype that can be accepted; when he has separated out in some way a specimen from a series of his own or other persons’ species it is obviously the prime choice as a lectotype.
