Conservation

How to purchase

Molluscan conservation is an important part of  the Society's activities, and is co-ordinated by the Honorary Conservation Officer (Dr Martin Willing) and  the Mollusc Conservation Group.  The Society's conservation concerns extend not only to the marine and non-marine molluscs of Great Britain and Ireland, but also to molluscan conservation in general. The Society is represented on all the Government's Biodiversity Steering Groups which are concerned with the conservation of some of Britain's rarest molluscs.

The Society also works closely with a wide range of other governmental and non-governmental organisations in order to include molluscs in programmes maintaining Britain's species and  habitat diversity.

The Society was involved in organising the first international conference devoted to Molluscan Conservation, held at Cardiff in 1996.

Members are encouraged to become interested in  all aspects of molluscan conservation. They can, in addition, become usefully involved at a local level. Each region of the country has its own molluscan specialities together with particular conservation issues and priorities. It is helpful for members to assess molluscan populations in local, then regional and national contexts. It is also valuable to integrate molluscan work with the conservation activities of other groups, such as the county Wildlife Trusts. In this way  members can assist in the vital process of whole habitat conservation.
